Pinterest Messaging is Tricky at Best and Broken at Worst
Pinterest is a popular social media site, but it falls short in a few areas. Search is not effective at getting all results. I call it broken. It does work but not well. Pinterest Messaging is another shortfall. There appears to be no way to send a message at all.
It is possible to send a message but it takes a bit of creativity and knowledge about the system to do this. There is no message center per se. In order to send a message to another user, you need to use the comment section or description area of a pin. This sounds odd but is the only way to do it that I have discovered so far.
Pinterest messaging is somewhat like tagging at Twitter. You use the @ key on your keyboard and add their user name immediately after the tag. For my Pinterest id the tag would look like this @networkingtips. Here are some ways to use the tag:
- Upload a picture and pin it to one of your boards. Message the other user by tagging them in the description area. They will get a message that they have been tagged in the photo.
- If you are a company and would like to invite other users to see your posts, just say “hi” mention the intention for communicating with them and then tag them with the @ and their user id. (use this sparingly, people do not like spam on Pinterest any more than they do anywhere else!)
- Say thank you for pins or repins, or comments, in the comment section by using the @ key and their user name.
- To join a group board that does not have directions for joining, use the comment section and tag the board creator with the @ sign and user ID and ask to join.
All of these will send a message to the person you tagged. But be aware - If the person has message settings turned to off, and they don’t check them on Pinterest, you may be out of luck. For the third rated social site, not having a messaging system is really surprising.
What do you think of the fact that the site has no real Pinterest messaging system? Do you believe they are missing out on a vital part of social media? Please leave your comments below.
